First urban scale test exclusively in Lugano

  • Tested theme: “Should we further explore the development of self-driving vehicles?”

In just a few weeks, more than 2500 passionate and informed arguments were collected for or against the further development of autonomous driving vehicles.

This made it possible to test for the first time on an urban scale Project Debater — Speech by Crowd, IBM Research's innovative Artificial Intelligence system developed in the laboratories of Haifa, Israel — capable of processing human thought in a highly performing way.

During the Lugano Digital Day 2019 on September 3, Alessandro Curioni — vice president of Research Europe and Africa at IBM and director of the IBM research laboratory in Zurich — presented to a curious and attentive audience the results of the experiment, which went beyond expectations both for the large participation and for the quality of the contents proposed by the participants.

This innovative experiment — conducted in collaboration between public and private — took place between mid-August and early September.
  • In everyday life, people are used to formulate their point of view on a topic, referring mainly to their experience. The hope is that Artificial Intelligence can help people consider new ideas and to think about situations starting from new angles. The goal is therefore to help make more reasoned decisions, supported by convincing and evidence-based arguments, while limiting the influence of emotions, preconceptions or ambiguities.

But who 'won' in the end? In reality it was not a race, however for the curious, Speech by Crowd registered a clear majority of arguments in favor of the further development of autonomous driving vehicles, about 7 out of 10 participants, with different motivations, expressed themselves in a positive way on the possible applications of self-driving vehicles.

The documents produced by Speech by Crowd, which can be consulted on this page, provide an objective and unbiased summary of a complex topic, both with regard to the arguments in favor and for the contrary arguments.
