Making Data Alive

L*3

Description

  • The digital revolution that has now reached almost every corner of the globe since the end of the last century is characterized by the collection, management and analysis of data of all kinds, with a multitude of uses, to the point that today we speak more and more often of the “data economy” (Data Economy).
In fact, more and more information is available to individuals and organizations, facilitating decisions based on real data.
  • Even the public sector, increasingly urged to find solutions to complex issues, cannot but look at that precious resource that are large amounts of data; hence, precisely, the involvement of City of Lugano as part of the USI Hackathon 2019, with the initiative Lugano Living Lab, promoted by the City and USI, which aims to offer a “real-life laboratory” experience in the urban environment by providing data relating to the territory for the production of significant digital services/products for citizens and tourists.
  • What took place in the Aula Magna of the Lugano campus can be defined precisely as a challenge “to the sound of data” (Data-Driven Contest).
Over the course of the two days, the participating teams had real - and anonymized - data provided by the City of Lugano and from a network of sources, for example the demographic information of residents, or data on transactions carried out in city stores, or even historical data on the hourly occupancy of parking lots and the data on the use of Bike sharing.
For the first time in Lugano, therefore, an approach was tested Open Data, which makes the USI Hackathon a real experiment on the concept of “Smart City”.

The competition

  • Using the data, the competitors faced the two proposed challenges: the one in the “development” field (Coding), developing a tool or prototype; or the one in the field of “data analysis” (Data analysis), proposing surveys that may one day lead to the provision of innovative services for the population.

The winner, selected by a jury of experts, was awarded a first prize of 4000 francs.
  • The USI Hackathon was not only aimed at 'mature' programmers, but also at younger ones, thanks to the”Mini-Hackathon” organized by Ated4Kids for children and families.
