Description

  • How to reconnect the city with the lake?
Some scenarios proposed by the project: Lungolago Lugano Vision Plan created by the Lugano Living Lab partners: Carlo Ratti Associates and MIC Mobility in Chain

It is possible to download the Lungolago Lugano Vision Plan document at this link. The document contains:

    Identifying potential:
Analysis of the challenges and potential of the Lugano mobility system, with particular attention to the lakefront case study.

    Definition of scenarios:
Adaptation of the solutions to the specific case of the lakefront, verifying the alignment of the proposals with future plans under different development scenarios.

Outlining of future targets and objectives:
Identification of the future-proof mobility strategies most suitable for the city, also based on the analysis of trends and best practices at local and international levels.

    Design guidelines:
Outline of the steps and checks that future design teams will have to take into account when defining the final design of the new lakefront.
  • The objective of the Lugano City Hall:
expanding the pedestrianized area of the center, making the walk along the lake more attractive, encouraging access to water and the revitalization of the center are measures that converge towards this purpose.
The development of the two sectors is considered essential for the harmonious growth of the city. Yes, because the lakefront is a precious public and social space that decisively qualifies the landscape and therefore the image and identity of Lugano.
The City Hall, finding an answer to current critical issues, therefore wants to promote a coherent city project tailored to citizens. And the decision taken in November 2020 by the executive to admit four groups selected by the Board of Experts to study in parallel goes in this direction. The pre-qualification phase, published on September 8, 2020, was attended by 15 candidates.
  • Next steps (November 2020 update):
From the parallel study terms, the Masterplan of the lakefront and Lugano center will emerge, which will outline a unified vision of the entire lake belt and the squares of the nucleus, identity spaces par excellence.
The strategic guidelines will identify the most functional, attractive and landscape-qualified areas and will provide guidance for their development. On this basis, it will be possible to start specific projects and promote insights and variants of the Regulatory Plan, with the request for targeted credits to the City Council.
